Produktbeschreibung

1. Why did you choose this topic?

Biodiversity loss receives surprisingly little attention in the social-scientific debate about contemporary socio-ecological challenges. What fascinates me about it is the long history of global and local, human and more-than-human relations through which it has emerged as the ecological problem it is today. I wanted to understand how both the loss of biodiversity in agriculture and divergent approaches to its conservation are rooted in specific modes of knowing and being in the world.

2. What new perspectives does your book offer?

I unfold a sociological analysis of agrobiodiversity loss and conservation that is rooted in feminist and decolonial science and technology studies. Through this lens I show that biodiversity loss in agriculture is not only a challenge for the modern world as we know it, but also a product of this world. To respond constructively to this problem I explore how Indigenous peoples in the Andes conserve biodiversity and what it means to consider its loss as something to be mourned rather than fixed.

3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?

The loss of biodiversity is a pressing yet understudied ecological and social problem. My book illustrates the importance of a careful in-depth historical and empirical social-scientific engagement with this issue. It helps us understand how today's ecological challenges have emerged from a long history of destructive relations with nature. Based on this insight, I show that our solution strategies must be evaluated in terms of whether they perpetuate or challenge these destructive relations.

4. Choose one person you would like to discuss your book with!

The greatest honour and pleasure would be to discuss my book with Donna Haraway. Her feminist theory of science and technology and her creative writing style have probably influenced and inspired my thinking and writing the most. Her insistent reminder that it matters what stories make worlds, what worlds make worlds is a golden thread that runs through the whole fabric of my inquiry. I would be very curious to hear what she would have to say about it.

5. Your book summary in one sentence:

Biodiversity loss is a result of a specific form of socio-ecological world-making and there is much more to dealing with it than putting seeds on ice.
