Die Reformationszeit ist auch eine Hochzeit der Briefkultur. Humanistisch geschulte Autoren treten miteinander in Briefwechsel, beraten theologische und politische Probleme, unterrichten einander über Fragen des täglichen Lebens und bekunden einander Feindschaft und Freundschaft. Erasmus und Johannes Reuchlin, Christoph Scheurl und Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon und Matthias Flacius korrespondieren miteinander, lateinisch und griechisch und, wenn es darauf ankommt, auch auf Deutsch. Daneben geht es um die Überlieferung und Sammlung der Briefe – eine bisweilen spannende Geschichte.
Die in diesem Buch versammelten Beiträge gehen auf eine wissenschaftliche Tagung der Stiftung Luthergedenkstätten in Sachsen-Anhalt zurück, die vom 25. bis 27. Januar 2023 in Wittenberg anlässlich des Ausscheidens des Vorstands und Direktors der Stiftung, Dr. Stefan Rhein, aus dem aktiven Dienst stattfand.

[Epistolary Culture and the Reformation Period]
The Reformation period marks also a peak of epistolary culture. Authors schooled in humanism enter into correspondence with each other, discuss theological and political problems, instruct each other on matters of daily life, and profess enmity and friendship towards each other. Erasmus and Johannes Reuchlin, Christoph Scheurl and Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon and Matthias Flacius are in correspondence, in Latin and Greek and, when it matters, also in German. It is also about the transmission and collection of the letters – an at times exciting story.
The contributions collected in this book originate from a scientific conference of the Luther Memorials Foundation in Saxony-Anhalt, which took place in Wittenberg from January 25 to 27, 2023, as the chairman and director of the foundation, Dr. Stefan Rhein, resigned from active duty.
