Produktbeschreibung

1. Why did you choose this topic?

I found it fascinating that while many national independence movements call for restrictions on globalisation and immigration, Scotland's quest for statehood does not. Instead, Scotland emphasises that politics should be conducted by those residing within the country, rather than by those of Scottish descent living abroad. This stands in stark contrast to the rightward shift observed in many other parts of the world, and I wanted to explore the reasons behind Scotland's unique approach.

2. What new perspectives does your book offer?

This book is the first to examine Scottish nationalism in the context of the functional differentiation of world society, where individuals engage in various societal macro-systems such as politics, economics, sports, and religion. It explores how the functional differentiation of world society and its inclusion and exclusion of individuals reshape Scottish nationalism, offering a fresh perspective on the dynamics of the formation of national identity.

3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?

Migration is a global challenge. Wealthy countries must open their borders to foreigners if they want to sustain their wealth. My study shows how this can be done without risking a right-wing backlash. Case studies on the Scottish anthem, religion and the Scottish parliament building demonstrate this. Scottish nationalism has succeeded in carving out symbols of national cohesion that combine the historical and cultural identity of Scottishness with openness to new ideas.

4. Your book summary in one sentence:

Scotland's democratic nationalism challenges the collectivist notion of nationalism amid a global trend polarising democracy and autocracy.
