Bottom up

Transepochal, multiperspektivisch und methodisch breit werden die Mitwirkungsmöglichkeiten ›von unten‹ von der Alten Geschichte, über das Mittelalter und die Frühe Neuzeit bis hin zur Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts in den Blick genommen. Im Zentrum des Bandes steht der historische Blick auf die vielfältigen Formen der Durchsetzung von Interessen und der politischen Partizipation durch Prozesse ›von unten‹ (bottom up). Im Kern geht es darum, statt der in der Geschichtswissenschaft fest etablierten und bislang weit überwiegenden Top-down-Perspektivierungen, wenn es um Fragen von Herrschaft oder Politikdurchsetzung im weitesten Sinne geht, Formen, Ziele und Wirkungsweisen von Prozessen stärker in den Blick zu nehmen, deren Stoßrichtung primär ›von unten‹ (bottom up) ausgeht. Damit in Verbindung steht das Ziel, stärker als bislang die Reziprozität von Top-down- und Bottom-up-Wirkmechanismen in den Vordergrund zu rücken. The question of participation from the bottom up is addressed in this book, drawing upon a wide range of subjects from ancient history, through the Middle Ages and the early modern period, to the history of the 20th century. This allows for a trans epochal, multi-perspective and methodically broad view of a phenomenon that plays a major role in other fields of science. The book's primary focus is on the historical perspective of diverse enforcement mechanisms and political participation, with a focus on bottom-up processes that aim to develop power to effect change. The objective is to identify ways to more thoroughly explore the potential of these approaches for historical science. The central issue pertains to the consideration of the forms, objectives, and consequences of processes that are predominantly initiated from the bottom upas opposed to the top-down perspectives that have historically dominated historical studies, particularly in the domain of rule or policy enforcement in the broadest sense. In this context, the emphasis on the reciprocity of top-down and bottom-up mechanisms assumes particular significance.
