Landscape is the dominant motif in Herbert Brandl's oeuvre. Ranging from objectivity to abstraction, his works oscillate between recognizable subjects and purely sensual impressions of color and form. Brandl's art unfolds during the painting process: swift, intuitive, with great physical effort, without preplanned, targeted methods. This intensive abandon in the act of painting and his relentless exploration of nature's various manifestations form the starting points for questions about Brandl's concept of painting and indeed nature. This book-published on the occasion of his solo exhibition at the Belvedere 21 in Vienna-focuses on the works he has produced over the past two decades, tracing how he has devoted his life to painting and how he gives expression to the relationship between art and the endangered environment in which we live.
