[Wittenberg Bible Printing of the Reformation Era]
In September 1522, Luther’s translation of the Bible was printed for the first time by Melchior Lotter the Younger in Wittenberg ('September Testament'). A comprehensive, unlimited printing and distribution privilege granted by the elector made Wittenberg the most important printing location for German-language Bibles in the empire for almost a century. The conference volume on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the first Luther Bible highlights essential aspects of printing, illustration, the addition of accompanying texts ('paratexts') and the ongoing revision of the Luther Bible in numerous, in part richly illustrated, contributions by renowned historians and book scholars. Another focus of the volume is the reception of the Wittenberg Bible editions at the courts as well as their use and reading by the bourgeoisie and the lower nobility.
