Chinese Quyi History

Ni Zhongzhi (1936-2016), is a remarkable Quyi scholar and Quyi educator in China. Long engaged in the theoretical research and teaching of Quyi, he has accumulated rich research results of Quyi history in practice, authored A History of Chinese Quyi, Quyi Folk Customs and Folk Quyi, A History of Chinese Crosstalk, A History of Contemporary Chinese Quyi, etc., and published a large quantity of Quyi papers, many of which are known as works “filling the discipline gap of Chinese art history” in Chinese and overseas academic circles. Quyi is a category of performing arts where performers achieve narrations by orally “telling and singing” in their true identity, and has a long history, profound tradition, unique charm and extensive influence in China. This book shows the development context of Chinese Quyi to the enthusiasts and researchers of traditional Chinese culture and art around the world, and enables readers to have a full understanding of the history and culture of Chinese Quyi. This book systematically describes the gestation, formation and development of ancient Chinese Quyi, as well as the formation of many types of modern Quyi. With a total of about 400,000 characters, sorted by dynasty, this book expounds on the status of Quyi in the Chinese literary and art history during different historical periods and the artistic characteristics thereof, and briefly introduces the development context of Chinese Quyi, as well as its representative types and artists in each period. It is a historical work at a high academic level.
