Abstract
New political parties play an important role in democracies by addressing issues relevant to society that are neglected by existing parties. In this way, they contribute to a functioning democracy and to party competition, as long as they do not question the political system as a whole. A comparative perspective shows that the number of new parties and their success vary across countries and over time. This variance can be ascribed to the conditions under which new parties emerge and establish themselves. These conditions are influenced by both the behaviour of existing parties as well as parties’ institutional and regulatory environments. This diversity demands an interdisciplinary approach, as is adopted in this volume. The comparative perspective in this volume illuminates the interaction between these factors in different contexts.
