[Lutheranism between Tradition and Awakening. Biographical and Work-Historical Explorations of Abraham Calov (1612–1686)]
Abraham Calov (1612–1686) was referred to as the 'second Athanasius' due to his sharp theological stance upon his death. He contributed greatly to the formation of the Lutheran tradition in the 17th century through his widely received and extensive biblical works as well as a large number of controversial theological writings. Integrated into wide-ranging networks, he is particularly suitable for analyzing academic and church-political communication and social spaces. He had a large number of friends and students, as well as opponents. His works have had an impact for generations. In two interdisciplinary working discussions at the Wittenberg Research Library for the History of the Reformation, the work of this Wittenberg theologian was examined not only from a theological point of view but also from the perspective of art, social, media and music history.
The results of these academic meetings, complemented by a comprehensive index of Calov's letters, are presented in this volume.
