In terms of variety and quality, the European paintings and sculpture in the Neue Pinakothek represent one of the world’s best collections of nineteenth-century art. As with the Alte Pinakothek, the gallery’s development was largely due to the artistic sensibilities of the Bavarian monarchy, in this case Ludwig I.
