This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the historical morphology and syntax of the German language. It conveys the fundamentals of the theory of morphological and syntactic language change and provides an in-depth illustration of, for example, developments in the systems of aspect, tense and mode; the development of the passive; the reconstruction of the case system; the structure of the system of articles; the phenomena of derivation and composition from a historical perspective; as well as the processes of change in the area of syntax. In this sense, the work traces the 'internal history' of the German language and its regulating system.
