Abstract
The collected essays delve into recent discourses, both interdisciplinary and disciplinary, relating to the history of the magazine genre and assemble current research findings from different fields about the function, use, and significance of the hitherto little-researched media types “illustrated magazine” and “illustrated newspaper”. This publication summarizes the results of the interdisciplinary conference "German illustrated magazines - journalism and visual culture in the Weimar Republic". Offering the building blocks for a cultural history of said magazines, the volume analyses the strategies of visual communication in addition to aspects of contemporary journalism and the history of photography and publishing. The represented approaches from history of art and literature used in their analysis of the aesthetics of the illustrated magazines as well as to their visual reception, contextualize the thematic orientation of the magazines looking at the cultural upheavals of their time.
The essays cover, among others, magazines such as „Der Querschnitt“, „Berliner Illustrierte Zeitung“, „Schünemanns Monatshefte“ or „Die Koralle“.
