Produktbeschreibung

1. Why did you choose this topic?

Lauren Aratani of the Guardian writes that diversity is “going to become a hot-button issue this year.” Whether we like it or not, the U.S. elections affect all of us, particularly regarding right-wing hostility towards immigrants, anti-feminist and anti-LGBTQIA+ sentiments, and the denial of climate change. Trump’s victory represents a victory for other right-wing national populist movements. We believe it is important to look at these issues from transnational perspectives.

2. What new perspectives does your book offer?

Scholars and activists based in Botswana, Cameroon, Germany, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, the Netherlands, South Africa, Uganda, the United States as well as in Native American nations and tribal communities come to word about how the U.S. elections affect diversity issues central to them. The book demonstrates that ethno-nationalistic, anti-immigration, anti-Muslim, anti-feminist, and anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric in the US and Europe draw on similar repertoires of scapegoating tropes and narratives.

3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?

Diversity stands at the heart of elections not only in the United States. With its successful deployment of a sense of imperiled rights, Trumpism extends far beyond the historical person of Donald Trump and will have a major impact on transnational diversity issues. We define transnational Trumpism as the steady testing of the sayable and doable at the expense of democratic institutions and non-violent speech.

4. Choose one person you would like to discuss your book with!

Sarah M. Knuckey, who is working on the instrumentalization of human rights discourse to restrict civil rights.

5. Your book summary in one sentence:

Diversity is democratic and anti-diversity efforts mask attempts to restrict democracy.
