Abstract In Brazil, informality stands for a lack of social security and political participation. The left-wing governments in Brazil wanted to reduce these disadvantages. Through reforms to recognise informal domestic work and micro-enterprises, such as street vendors, they aimed to redistribute such work and make it less precarious. Political obstacles and resistance slowed down these measures considerably and limited their success. This study analyses the often praised employment policy of ‘left-wing’ Brazil using numerous empirical studies and compares it in different sectors. It not only comes to sobering results, but also identifies important lessons for the future.
