The last few decades have brought along a variety of crises, posing significant and complex questions to humankind. In 2023, the Social Design Network organized a scientific conference on how the field of design relates to crises and how this discipline can help approach such a complex topic. This book presents a collection of peer-reviewed papers as well as student contributions and field-based case studies featured at the conference.

We believe design operates as a catalyst for innovation, integrating interdisciplinary approaches to develop resilient and adaptive solutions. By convening experts and disseminating research-driven insights, we aimed to advance a discourse that positions design as a transformative framework for problem-solving. Our objective was to illustrate how design methodologies can reconfigure complex systems, enhance community resilience, and foster sustainable, equitable progress in an era of accelerating global challenges.

Amidst the multifaceted challenges of our times, a growing discourse surrounds the potential for design to not only react but also serve as a catalyst for transformative change. This discourse raises pivotal questions about the role of design in fostering hope, generating realistic solutions, and mitigating global and local crises. Drawing upon interdisciplinary perspectives and empirical research, as well as case studies, authors examine the new role of designers.
