This book offers a new approach to formalizing a functional grammar in terms of set theory. It analyses modality and sentence types in English, together with five basic English tones, in terms of a single integrated formal framework of sets and operators. This provides an account of subtle distinctions within English modality and has the potential to apply to other languages also. The framework lends itself to conversion into a computer program.
