Diese Aktualisierung der Rousseau’schen Volkssouveränität formuliert eine
radikaldemokratische Alternative zur liberalen transnationalen
Demokratietheorie. Während letztere auf die Globalisierung normativ mit
individualistischen Rechtsansprüchen und good governance antwortet, eröffnet die
radikaldemokratische politische Philosophie Rousseaus die Möglichkeit, die
Redemokratisierung einer postnationalen Staatsbürgerschaft zu imaginieren.
Rousseaus spezifischer Beitrag zur radikalen Demokratietheorie, nämlich den
Herrschaftsanspruch des Volkes auf die Herstellungsmechanismen der
(Re)Produktion des Kollektivs auszudehnen, eignet sich - entgegen seiner
überwiegend konservativen Rezeptionsgeschichte und entgegen den
Entdemokratisierungstendenzen eines juridisch dominierten Diskurses über die
Europäische Union – hervorragend, die Überwindung der nationalen Subjektivierung
denkbar zu machen und die Hoffnung auf ein Mehr an politischer Teilhabe und
sozialer Gleichheit zu begründen.

Abstract This actualization of Rousseau's concept of popular sovereignty provides a radical democratic alternative to the liberal transnational theory of democracy. Whereas the latter responds normatively to globalization with claims for individual rights and standards of good governance, the radical democratic political philosophy of Rousseau enables us to imagine the re-democratization of post national citizenship. Rousseau's radical philosophy is – against its conservative reception and against the legalistic discourse of the European Union – perfectly suited to overcoming the national form of subjectivization and gives us reasons to hope for more political participation and social equality. This is so because Rousseau conceptualizes radical democracy as an extensive claim for collective self-determination, which encompasses the mechanisms to (re)produce the collective.
