Eine königliche Mission

1708 war ein Schicksalsjahr für Großbritannien und die Jakobiten. Eine Invasion an der ost-schottischen Küste sollte die Linie der Stuarts zurück auf den Thron bringen – und Frankreich gleichzeitig einen Verbündeten bescheren. Trotz der hervorragenden Erfolgsaussichten, die die 'Expedition' hatte, scheiterte sie. Durch die Kontextualisierung dieses Ereignisses innerhalb der Dreierbeziehung England-Schottland-Frankreich und innerhalb der komplexen europäischen Machtkonstellation um 1700 gelingt es der Autorin, sie in ihrer Bedeutung für die europäische Geschichte zu rekonstruieren. Sie bringt Licht in die Bedeutung des Jakobitismus und untersucht das Ereignis auch kulturgeschichtlich im Geflecht gegenseitiger Wahrnehmungen, Stereotype und nationaler Identitätskonstruktionen in einem neu entstandenen Öffentlichkeitsraum.

The year 1708 was a fateful one for Great Britain and the Jacobites. An invasion of the eastern Scottish coast was to bring the line of the Stuarts back to the throne – and, at the same time, provide France with an ally. Despite the “expedition’s” high chances of success, it failed. Through the contextualisation of this event within the England-Scotland-France tripartite relationship and the complex European power constellation around 1700, the author succeeds in reconstructing this in its significance for European history. She sheds light onto the meaning of Jacobitism, all the while examining the event from a cultural-historical perspective within the interwoven fabric of mutual perceptions, stereotypes and national identity constructions in a newly emerged public space.
