Public Financial Management since the Global Financial Crisis

Public financial management (PFM) has gone through a period of intense change since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008-2009 and its aftermath. These developments include the financial response to climate change, gender-related budgeting, fiscal transparency and fiscal risks, public investment, and digitization and AI. This anthology of collected work first published through the PFM blog hosted by the IMF describes these key developments from 2008 to 2024 and organizes them by topic. With an introduction to each section written by Richard Allen, the book tells a story of the change within the industry and the effects on those who both research it and work in it, and will be of interest to policymakers, public financial management scholars, professors, practitioners, and financial historians.
