This guide is the essential companion to experienced observers and newcomers alike. Every suburban amateur astronomer does nightly battle with orange-gray skies, eye-watering street lamps, stubbornly placed trees and inconveniently sited houses. The book aims to help those who live in or near suburban areas to find and enjoy popular and interesting objects visible in suburban skies. It is based on an original list of objects that experienced members of the Loughton Astronomical Society drafted for its membership, beginning a few years ago and updated ever since. All these objects could be found using star hopping methods rather than relying on a GOTO telescope. This guide is ideal for users who own relatively modest equipment ranging from binoculars to refractors of 80mm to 150 mm or reflectors of up to the 200 mm class, although those with larger instruments will still find the target objects of interest. Using a special ranking, the authors guide observers through a list of their favorite objects – many well-known, some perhaps less so – using star hopping techniques to navigate the night sky. Each object has a detailed description from an observer’s point of view and why it is included in the list. The book also contains a section on planetary positions over the coming years and some thoughts on popular astronomy apps and software. As a result, readers gain a “view of Earth” from their back yard and will have a host of popular objects to share with friends and family.
