The artist Edmund Kalb (1900-1952), largely unknown thus far, is introduced in this 208-page catalogue by way contributions from Rudolf and Kathleen Sagmeister, as well as Klaus Albrecht Schröder, and a section of plates illustrating around 100 exhibits. The book affords insights into the work of an artist, who, from the middle of the 1920s, sounded out the graphical representation of something as accessible and yet undefinable as his own face with a variety of means. Edmund Kalb, born in Dornbirn, sold none of his work during his lifetime, but documented it photographically and maintained regular correspondence with artists from all around the world. From 1930 his thoughts were increasingly governed by themes such as mathematics, mechanics, perceptional psychology, nuclear physics, space technology and plant breeding, while his scepticism towards authority brought him into conflict with the law several time up to his death in 1952. With the first comprehensive presentation of Kalb's work in Vienna, a body of work is illuminated that is as autonomous as it is distinctive, but at the same time enters into an exciting dialogue with the great self-portrait artists in the Leopold collection such as Richard Gerstl, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka.
