This detailed, superbly illustrated guide to pathology of the maxillofacial bones describes a wide range of entities, with emphasis on those features that can give rise to diagnostic confusion. The book is divided into three main sections: cysts and odontogenic tumors, which are lesions related to the dentition, fibro-osseous and giant cell lesions, which are more or less unique to the maxillofacial skeleton, and bone lesions that also occur at other body sites. The aim is to provide reliable diagnostic guidelines for the surgical pathologist who has to deal with specimens from this region. Histological examination of diseases of the maxillofacial bones is a highly specialized field in head and neck pathology, requiring expertise in both general and dental pathology. Embryologically, the maxillofacial skeleton is unique, as parts of it develop from cells migrating from the embryonal neuroectoderm. Furthermore, it houses the teeth. Owing to these special features, diseases occur in this area that are not seen in any other part of the skeleton. Moreover, bone diseases with a distribution throughout the body may cause entirely different differential diagnostic problems when located  in the maxillofacial area because of specific clinical, radiological, and histological details at this site. By covering bone disorders that are restricted to the head and neck and diseases that also occur in the extragnathic skeleton, this book will serve as a comprehensive guide that fully meets the pathologist’s requirements.
