The Battle of the Sexes in D.H. Lawrence's Prose, Poetry and Paintings

It is a truism among Lawrence scholars that Lawrence was primarily interested in the relationship between man and woman. Since the Battle of the Sexes is the dominant narrative of Lawrence's life and work, it serves as the central principle that holds all the different pieces together. This study is an attempt to encounter a 'whole' Lawrence by paying tribute to him as a man and as an artist.

The volume has three main parts. It starts with an analysis of the socio-political and cultural realities shaping the relationship between men and women in contemporary Britain. The second part presents Lawrence as a modern man, showing how he suffered from the general crisis of manhood. The third part offers a thorough and provocative analysis of the presentation of the Battle of the Sexes in Lawrence's prose, poetry and paintings.
