Abstract
For some time now, right-wing populism, right-wing extremism, and even right-wing terrorism have once again manifested themselves as a political reality in contemporary Europe. The right fringe has institutionalized itself almost everywhere in different forms and with differing degrees of strength, influencing government policies in a number of countries. How can these worrying tendencies be explained? What role do the internet and social media play in the dissemination of right-wing extremist sentiments? And what strategies are available to confront the dangers emanating from the far right? In order to provide at least preliminary answers, this volume combines contributions from various fields of study. Along with scholars from a number of different countries, politicians, journalists, and representatives of civil society organizations are given the opportunity to add their assessments as authors. A focus is placed on the developments in northern Europe, in particular on Norway which was shaken by the murder of 77 people at the hands of far-right terrorist Anders Breivik in 2011.
