The founding of the Saxon Electoral Art Collection and Library in the mid-16th century created a collection of prints and drawings which only became a separate ‘Kupferstich-Kabinett’ around 1720 as part of the process of establishing various special collections. Based on an analysis of the holdings from Dresden and numerous newly-available sources, this study provides an exemplary description of the holdings and arrangement, the aim and accessibility, and the structure and internal order of an early modern graphic arts collection.

In this fundamental study, augmented by systematically edited excerpts from inventories, the author discusses elements of academic history as well as examining issues of courtly representation, discourses of art and of order, and similar collections in Munich, Ambras, Prague, Italy and Paris. Setting up an independent collection of graphic art was the result of a protracted differentiation of collecting and artistic genres and of the development of academic taxonomies. In this context it is possible to identify the ‘Kupferstich-Kabinett’ as a microcosm of changing orders.

In 2010 Christian Melzer’s dissertation was awarded the Wolfgang-Ratjen-Preis, an international prize for outstanding research in the field of graphic arts.
