Das Werk ist Teil der Reihe: Studien zur Kunstgeschichte; 194

This study is the first comprehensive history of the piano nobile. This was the level, usually on the first floor, in grand secular buildings, also known as the bel-étage. Ist basic function was and is to facilitate the representation of power without exploiting social distinctions as a contrast between “upper and lower”.
Ancient cultures did not have an equivalent of the piano nobile; it first appeared in the form it retains today in the middle ages. This exemplary process in the genesis of building styles is examined in closer detail, with specific focus on the question of how far it was based in a specific set of historical circumstances and how the ideas and values of a vertical hierarchy and fundamental anthropological conditions were expressed in it. By examining central concepts of building typology, the book also constitutes a concise introduction to the history of western architecture.
