Opening a gallery for contemporary art in a tiny village with six houses in the Upper Palatinate sounds like a mad idea. But Michael Zink has been in the business long enough to know that not even a gallery in the centre of Berlin is a recipe for success. He knows the long hours without visitors and the fleeting visits of clueless passers-by. People who come to Waldkirchen come to stay. They don't just come for the opening exhibition but by appointment for many intensive hours of viewing and debating. The planned visits are made not only on behalf of the hospitable gallery owner and his programme but also the unique place, which is characterised by an interplay of landscape, history and architecture.
