Die Standard-Bildfrequenz für Kinofilme liegt bei 24 Bildern in der Sekunde. Diese technologisch manifestierte Aneinanderreihung von Bildern im Gegensatz zum Einzelbild prägt das Werk von David Krippendorff (geb. 1967 in Berlin, lebt und arbeitet ebenda), das sich zwischen Malerei, Zeichnung, Video und Film bewegt. Krippendorff entwickelt Arbeiten, die von seiner Herkunft gekennzeichnet sind - als Deutsch-Amerikaner wuchs er in Rom auf - und sich mit Themen wie Zugehörigkeit, kultureller Assimilation und Zuständen des Dazwischen- und Andersseins auseinandersetzen.

Die Publikation Interpretations konzentriert sich auf Krippendorffs letzte fünf Filme und die in diesem Zusammenhang entstandenen verwandten Arbeiten. Im Mittelpunkt der Monografie steht die von Musik inspirierte Trilogie Lament, die in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der palästinensischen Schauspielerin Hiam Abbass entstand. Neben einem umfangreichen Bildteil enthält das Buch ein Interview mit Krippendorff von Kathrin Becker sowie Essays zu seinem Werk von David Elliott, Mark Gisbourne, Matthias Reichelt, Andrea Scrima und Chiara Valci Mazzara.

Between Pop Culture, Performance, and Cinema

The standard frame rate for theatrical motion pictures is 24 images per second. This technologically manifest concatenation of pictures and its contrast with the individual image informs the oeuvre of David Krippendorff (b. Berlin, 1967; lives and works in Berlin), which spans painting, drawing, video, and film. Krippendorff develops works that are shaped by his background-a dual German-American citizen, who grew up in Rome-and wrestle with subjects such as belonging, cultural assimilation, and states of being in-between and different.

The publication Interpretations focuses on Krippendorff's five most recent films and works he produced in connection with them. At the center of the monograph stands the trilogy Lament, which was inspired by music and created in close collaboration with the Palestinian actor Hiam Abbass. In addition to illustrations related to the works, the book contains an interview with Krippendorff by Kathrin Becker and essays on his art by David Elliott, Mark Gisbourne, Matthias Reichelt, Andrea Scrima, and Chiara Valci Mazzara.
