‘Plant Stress Tolerance, Bioremediation, and Bioprospecting’ is the theme for the third volume of the series book ‘Bacilli and Agrobiotechnology’. Due to the physiological versatility, endospore-forming and facultative anaerobic Bacillus species can be applied in different areas of biotechnology. Bacillus spp. produce diverse classes of secondary metabolites, which has a positive effect on plant growth including increased abiotic and biotic stress tolerance that in turn reduces the use of synthetic chemicals in agriculture. A large body of literature indicates that Bacillus spp. has been reported to alleviate stress in plants by activating various signaling pathways including reducing lipid peroxidation and superoxide dismutase activity. Therefore, scientists working for green technologies consider this genus as a resilient alternative in modern-day agro-practices. Bacillus species are known to regulate the uptake and distribution of nutrients, transport of water, and accumulation of compatible solutes and antioxidants in plant tissues, which help to improve plant productivity under drought and saline environments. Agricultural lands contaminated with heavy metals affect the ecological food chain starting from crop cultivation. The toxic effects of trace metals originating from industrial effluents and agrochemicals are reported to be reduced when heavy metal-contaminated soil is inoculated with Bacillus species. As stressful soil environments, such as highly saline and heavy metal contaminated soils reduce productivity, their management using Bacillus spp. appears to be an attractive and sustainable option, and relevant information needs to be compiled. Such effort will result in the development of a knowledge-based volume on the role of Bacillus spp. in stress management for better agricultural productivity. Contents representing these brilliant ideas will attract readers, researchers, and industries to this book. Bacillus spp. are also being utilized for bioremediation, which represents the practice of cleaning up the environment in an eco-friendly manner. Bioremediation involves microorganism-produced enzymes for bio-transformation of pollutants by natural processes. Scientists and environmentalists are excited about the applied aspects of bioremediation with Bacillus spp. In the current era of chemical exposure to the environment, huge challenges and opportunities lie ahead involving Bacillus spp. provided significant research is done in the relevant area and results compiled. Combined pollution originating from high molecular weight hydrocarbons, crude oil, heavy metals, organic pollutants, industrial sludge, organophosphate, and other pesticides, can reliably be tackled to a considerable extent by using Bacillus species. The addition of Bacillus with a consortium of microorganisms is known to increase pollutant degradation efficiency by many folds as Bacillus spp. have effective metal tolerating and bio-sorption capacity.
