Abstract
The essays in this volume deal with plants and food as highly artificial yet living things. On the basis of the techno-philosophical concept of ‘biofacts’ (Nicole C. Karafyllis), the authors analyse contemporary developments in agriculture and the food sector. Biofacts–as demonstrated–undermine the traditional distinction between dead technology and living nature and, hence, the practical assignments and moral expectations that are tied to them. The ambiguity of crops and food items is the topic of this volume with contributions from the fields of history, sociology, philosophy and design theory. The book’s geographical scope encompasses Africa and Europe, while its historical scope ranges from the beginning of the 20th century to the present and the future.
