Linguistique de l'universel

Une édition augmentée de l'ouvrage de Robert Martin, membre de l'AIBL,
intitulé <i>Linguistique de l'universel</i> paraîtra en janvier 2020. Le
recueil regroupe deux communications présentées devant notre Académie,
l'une en mai 2014 ('Sur les universaux du langage'), l'autre en juin
2016 (sur 'Les concepts universels'), ainsi que le discours prononcé
lors de la séance solennelle sous la Coupole en novembre 2015 ('Sur la
notion de langue universelle'). Ces interventions ont en commun de
porter sur le thème des langues et de l'universalité. Elles ont été
reproduites sans changement, mais il a paru judicieux d'y ajouter, non
seulement une brève Annexe où sont explicitées les options théoriques
qui ont été prises, mais un chapitre supplémentaire ('La linguistique et
l'universalité') qui montre la place déterminante des universaux du
langage dans le statut de science que la linguistique revendique. La
seconde édition approfondit cet aspect. Dédié à la 'linguistique de
l'universel', l'ouvrage procure ainsi, en linguistique générale, une
synthèse novatrice.

This book features two papers given at
the <i>Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres</i>, one in May 2014
("On the universals of language"), the other in June 2016 (on "Universal
concepts"), as well as the speech given at the induction ceremony at the
Académie in November 2015 ("On the notion of universal language"). All
three have the common topic of languages and universality. They are
reproduced here as originally written, but it has been judged useful to
add not only a brief addendum explaining the theoretical options chosen,
but also an additional chapter ("Linguistics and Universality"), to show
how important universals of language are in conferring a scientific
status on linguistics, to which it aspires. This aspect is further
developed in the second edition. Dedicated to the “linguistics of the
universal”, the book provides an innovative synthesis within general
linguistics.
