The public perception of Islam is dominated by taboos which hinder, if not entirely prevent, a frank, intellectually honest examination of the peculiarities of this religion and of the claims to power of many of its functionaries. This favours the emergency of a parallel society which brusquely rejects the liberal, secular community whose advantages are self-evident for an overwhelming majority.
In view of this, Tilman Nagel advocates a taboo-free discussion of the characteristics of Islam, which makes it difficult for its confessors to fruitfully participate in our society. The author describes the historical and contemporary dimension of these characteristics from different angles. Because only a solid understanding of these characteristics makes it possible to analyse the problems which Europe faces as a result of Muslim immigration. Problems which cannot be made to disappear by glossing over them or silencing them.
