»The Institutional Embeddedness of Social Systems« Niklas Luhmann's sociological systems theory is one of the most ambitious attempts to understand contemporary society. Nonetheless, the keywords exclusion, risk and ecology highlight problems that push Luhmann's theory to its limits. The study proposes a theoretical reorientation. With reference to the »Leipzig School« of sociology around Hans Freyer, Gotthard Günther, Arnold Gehlen and Helmut Schelsky it develops the idea that social systems can be viewed as institutionally embedded.
