The role of courts and codification is explained, as well as the ways that distinct national traditions have shaped military occupation. These themes are explored through examples from across the globe, from American occupations of Mexico and later Cuba, through the Franco-Prussian war to the British occupation of Egypt and the Japanese occupations of Chinese territory; often revealing common elements in the experience of occupiers and occupied.
